I Loved You Last – Poem

old man on bench

I loved you first.

Young and innocent.

They say you don’t know then

But isn’t that the purest form?

First dances,

First kisses,

First butterflies,

First heartache.

I loved you first.

Bold and risky.

They say you can’t do that

But isn’t that the best way?

Second chances,

Second dances,

Second touches,

Second breath.

I loved you first.

Bitter and sorry.

They say you should’ve known better

But isn’t that the lesson?

Third fight,

Third cry,

Third dance,

Third try.

I loved you still.

Fierce and secret.

They say you never forget

And isn’t that the way?

Fourth time,

Fourth scream,

Fourth talk,

Fourth gift.

I loved you first.

Accepted and fond.

The locket kept.

The secrets never told.

The words never whispered.

The chances left behind.

Like any good muse

Beautiful and seductive

Whose heart is intertwined.

I loved you first

With not all I had.

They say you don’t know how to

But isn’t that supposed to be?

All these years later,

I loved you first. And, I will love you last.
